I’m sorry: как правильно просить прощения на английском

Никто не любит признавать свои ошибки и просить за них прощения. Зачастую сделать это на своем родном языке не представляется возможным, что уж говорить об иностранном. Тем не менее, подобрать нужные слова, чтобы извиниться перед другом, любимым человеком или начальником — важно. В сегодняшней статье разберемся зачем необходимо извиняться и как правильно это сделать на английском языке.

When someone makes a mistake, it is natural to want to make it up to the person you have wronged. Most people find this difficult to do. Many have trouble expressing themselves and do not know how to apologize. Many more have trouble accepting an apology and choosing to let the matter drop. But all people can learn from other people's experiences when trying to resolve conflicts. By observing how someone manages an apology, you can learn how to best express your regret and receive forgiveness.

Formal Apologies

A formal apology might include a formal statement and a promise to do better in the future. In this situation, the person offering the apology might say something like:

I'm sorry for my behavior earlier. I was rude and thoughtless, and it will not happen again.

Прощу прощение за свое поведение ранее. Я вел себя грубо и необдуманно, такого больше не повторится

I want to apologize sincerely, so please allow me this moment to do so.

Я искренне хочу извиниться, поэтому, пожалуйста, позвольте мне сделать это сейчас.

This type of apology indicates that the person offering it has learned his/her lesson and is sincere in his/her remorse. A formal statement gives the other person assurance that he is being heard and understood. It shows that you are capable of expressing your thoughts and feelings in an acceptable manner — which is essential when choosing to apologize.

Personal apology

A personal apology is just a way to tell the other person you are sorry for causing him/her pain. In this case, the personal apology might sound similar like:

I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings by calling you names. You were only trying to help me, but my attitude was hurtful. I want you to know that I'm sincerely sorry for my behavior.

Прости, что я ранил твои чувства своими обзывательствами. Ты только пытался мне помочь, но мое отношение было оскорбительным. И я хочу, чтобы ты знал — я искренне сожалею о своем поведении.

Here, the person offering the apology understands that he is responsible for his/her actions and will do whatever he/she can make amends. He/she wants to show his/her remorse by directly apologizing for his/her actions — something that many people find difficult to do.
However, following this up with a promise not to repeat the behavior proves that he is serious in his repentance. Offering an explanation may help him/her realize why he/she behaved as he/she did can make him feel more secure when apologizing.

There are numerous ways to apologize and say “sorry” in English. Here are some useful expressions we can use to apologize:

I apologize... — Я прошу прощения...
I would like to extend my apologies... — Я хотел бы принести свои извинения...
Pardon… — Простите...
I beg your pardon… — Извините...
My bad… — Виноват...
I am so sorry about that… — Я очень сожалею об этом…
I am terribly/deeply sorry… — Мне ужасно/глубоко жаль...
Sorry! I did not mean to do/say that… — Извиняюсь! Я не хотел этого делать/говорить...
I owe you an apology… — Я должен извиниться перед тобой...
I sincerely apologize… — Я искренне извиняюсь...
Please forgive what I said/did… — Пожалуйста, прости меня за то, что я сказал/сделал...
How can I make it up to you? — Как я могу загладить вину?
I wish I could take it back… — Если бы я только мог взять свои слова обратно…
I did not mean to hurt/offend you… — Я не хотел вас обидеть/оскорбить...
Can you forgive me? — Ты сможешь простить меня?

Apologizing is an important social skill we all need from time to time in our lives. However, most of us are failing at this task without any real guidance or experience with apologies.
